Yesterday, I was a guest on Pagan Radio Tonight. Selena Fox asked me to contribute to the continuing discussion on the Fox Media saga. I was happy to do so. To be honest, it was my first time doing a live broadcast and being a guest caller into a radio station. I’m a much better writer than speaker so I don’t seek out public speaking opportunities.
The show started at 9pm EST. That’s late for me to be doing anything worthwhile. However, I’ve never been one to back away from a challenge – staying awake being this one. So, I got myself ready not knowing exactly what to expect. I made some hot tea and settled myself into a comfortable chair with my computer and phone. When the time came, I called in and waited to be addressed. After the first question was over, I was relieved that I could actually speak coherently.
I was thrilled to see local friends in the chat room. “Hi Lady Charissa! I’m on the radio!”
But then it happened! A gigantic, southern-size black roach slowly meandered across the room. There I was on the phone live listening to Selena Fox and the other guests talk about equal rights while watching a combat-size roach marching in my direction. It took every nerve in body, every bit of energy, to stay seated and not react to the vile creature; not to scream and head for the hills.
To clarify, I am not bug-challenged. I save spiders and all. But when it comes to roaches in the home…. no way! I lose my grip. To justify my aggression, I have decided that a roach is lost soul trapped in a nasty little body. It must be killed to be saved. So I’m technically not doing “harm.”
(Now, there’s some good “spiritual” spin work for you.)
Anyway, the roach stopped a few times to consider my seated position. Was I gonna launch an attack? Was I going to let it finish its journey? As I stared in its direction, it twitched its long dangling antenna at me as if mocking my helpless state. Then it disappeared as roaches are apt to do.
So if you listen to the broadcast, remember that while I was engaged in the conversation, I was also engaged in a battle of wills with a roach.
